Antimony Mercury Oxide 7440-36-0
Red Mercury Liquid Mercury

1. Basic Information

Name: Antimony Mercury Oxide
Alias: Mercury pyroantimonate, Red mercury, Oxystybate
CAS No.: 20720-76-7
Molecular Formula: Sb2Hg2O7
Molecular Weight: 756.80

2. Physical and Chemical Properties

Physical Properties

  1. Appearance: Cherry-red crystalline solid/powder; high-purity grade shows semi-liquid viscous form under room temperature
  2. Odor: Metallic faint mercury odor
  3. Solubility: Insoluble in water, ethanol and all common organic solvents; reacts slowly with dilute strong acid to release mercury ions
  4. Density: 9.5–10.5 g/cm3
  5. Melting Point: Decomposes at about 700 °C without stable melting point
  6. Hygroscopicity: Slightly hygroscopic, adsorbs trace moisture in humid air
  7. Crystal Structure: Orthorhombic pyroantimonate crystal lattice, composed of Hg2+ and Sb2O74- pyroantimonate groups

Chemical Properties

  1. Molecular structure: Inorganic double oxide salt formed by Hg cation and pyroantimonate anion Sb2O74-
  2. Acid decomposition: Reacts with hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid to generate soluble mercury salts, antimony salts and oxygen
  3. Thermal decomposition: Decomposes above 700 °C into mercury oxide, antimony trioxide and oxygen gas
  4. Redox characteristic: Mercury ion inside can be reduced to elemental mercury by strong reducing agents; antimony(V) can be reduced to Sb(III)
  5. Photostability: Sensitive to strong ultraviolet light; long-term light exposure fades red color and precipitates mercury suboxide
  6. Compatibility: Incompatible with reducing agents, strong acids, ammonia water and alkaline sulfide solutions

3. Main Application Fields

1. Special Laboratory Research Reagent (Core Application)

  1. Standard reference substance for mercury-antimony heavy metal co-detection in environmental soil and water samples
